BRSCC 2006 FORMULA FORD FESTIVAL Brands Hatch 19 to 21 October 2007
This years Festival enjoyed excellent weather but both finals were marred by incidents which necessitated use of the red flag to end them prematurely. This was very regrettable as there was some great competitive racing. There was no 1800 [Zetec] final as there were insufficient entries so this may be the last year for this class at the Festival.
Kent [1600cc] Final Peter Dempsey claimed pole position with Wayne Boyd alongside, Robert Barrable & Josh Fisher on the second row and Patrick McKenna & Keith Dempsey on row 3. Peter Dempsey made an excellent start with Wayne Boyd tucking in behind him then Robert Barrable followed by Josh Fisher behind them. Tom Bradshaw and Peter Barrable managed two laps before coming adrift at Graham Hill Bend. At the front the fortunes of the leaders varied with Dempsey managing to break clear with Robert Barrable threatening Boyd’s second place. During the thirteenth lap Robert Barrable managed to head Boyd who fought back to regain second in the lap. In the meantime Keith Dempsey had dropped to seventh on lap 9 before regaining sixth on lap 11 and, fortunately, getting past Neville Smyth and Josh Fisher on lap 18.
On the nineteenth lap Boyd got past Peter Dempsey on the inside at Paddock Hill. Peter Dempsey then charged up the inside towards Druids and took himself and Boyd off into the gravel on the outside leaving the officials with no alternative but to red flag the race. The result was declared and the leaders at the end of lap 18 after the exclusion of those not running when the red flag was shown took the honours. Keith Dempsey first [below left], Robert Barrable second and Patrick McKenna third.
Duratec Final Nick Tandy who started second on the grid and finished fifth last year claimed pole this year. Alongside him was Callum Macleod with Linton Stutely and Dennis Brown on the second row. Tandy got clean away with Macleod behind him and pressing hard eventually passing him on the second lap. Stephen Roberts went astray at Graham Hill Bend but with his car umoveable on the edge of the track the safety car was called out. Racing resumed on lap 6 with Macleod in the lead followed closely by Tandy, Stuteley, Brown and James Nash. After just one and a half laps of racing the safety car neutralised the race whilst the cars of Nils Vestergaard and Simon Knap were removed from Paddock Hill bend safer positions. The green flag came out at the start of lap 12 and the hunt was on. Regrettably Rogier de Witt came to grief on the exit of Druids stopping on the outside half way down Graham Hill. The Rescue Unit was scrambled to attend him which necessitated at red flag. With the fifteenth lap then underway it was decided to declare a result. The roll back to the end on lap 13 showed Callum Macleod just in the lead followed by Tandy and Stuteley. Macleod was, however, given a 2 second penalty [rule O.1.1.5] by the Clerk of the Course which was subsequently upheld by the Stewards. This was enough to knock him back to second place leaving Nick Tandy declared winner [below right] and Macleod second and Stuteley third.
